The early 1960s saw Chelyabinsk Pipe Rolling Plant build a mill to manufacture first-ever large-diameter (1,020–1,220 mm) pipes in the Soviet Union in response to the ban on gas pipeline imports introduced by the Federal Republic of Germany. The new capacities were put on stream within the shortest timeframe possible. Piloted as part of the Central Asia – Centre project, these pipes proved to be indispensable in the construction of gas trunklines countrywide.
The Central Asia – Centre project continued until 1985, creating a multi-line network of gas trunklines and offshoots. Today, the approximately 5,000 km-long pipeline runs across Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Russia.
